The Alpha Queen Returns – Episode 16
War reached the western territory before dawn. Villages that had survived generations of pack conflict burned beneath a sky smothered in black smoke. Families fled through forests lit orange by their homes, while rogue wolves hunted along roads the royal army had once promised to keep safe.
Border soldiers fought for every bridge and stone wall. Their silver armor flashed between columns of fire, but discipline could not compensate for the unnatural strength driving Darkmoon’s forces. Wounded rogues kept charging with broken limbs, their bodies held together by magic that smelled of blood and scorched iron. Each clash ended with another defensive line broken and another outpost swallowed by crimson energy.
At the center of the destruction stood Killian Darkmoon. Shadow wrapped his black armor, and a red glow pulsed beneath his skin like a second heart. He made no speeches and issued no shouted commands. One movement of his hand sent dozens of royal warriors collapsing into the ash.
A rogue commander knelt before him, careful not to look directly into his crimson eyes. “My lord, the western line is secured. The surviving defenders are retreating toward the river.”
Darkmoon watched the distant eastern road. “Where is she?”
The commander hesitated, uncertain whether he meant Caroline or the Queen. “Jessica is mobilizing the Royal Army. Our scouts report that she has left the capital.”
A faint smile touched Darkmoon’s mouth. The villages, casualties, and conquered land had never been his true objective. They were bait written in fire. “Good. Then she is coming.”
Miles away, Jessica stood over a tactical map inside the royal war camp. Red markers covered three border regions, each representing a fallen outpost or a settlement cut off from reinforcements. Reports arrived faster than commanders could read them.
Sarabeth entered with soot on her cloak. She had flown over the evacuation routes in shifted form and seen the burning line for herself. “Casualties are increasing faster than predicted. Darkmoon’s troops are not holding captured ground; they’re driving civilians ahead of them and pushing straight toward the old fortress.”
Jessica’s gaze remained on Killian’s name. “How many civilians reached the evacuation corridors?”
“Less than forty percent.” Sarabeth did not soften the number. Thousands still lay between the rogue army and the river, while royal patrols struggled to reach them.
The air inside the tent grew heavy as Jessica’s aura rose. A younger officer stepped back from the map, but Sarabeth held her position. “No more retreat,” Jessica said.
“If we advance too quickly, we leave the capital exposed,” Sarabeth warned. “Darkmoon may be drawing us west so another force can strike behind us.”
“He is drawing me west,” Jessica corrected. The message left at the border echoed in her thoughts: Return my Moon Wolf, or the kingdom burns. “This is not a campaign for territory. It is an attempt to possess my daughter.”
Caroline’s bruised face rose in her memory, followed by Rex’s threat and Reva’s contempt. Jessica had already allowed one enemy to hide behind her daughter’s silence. She would not let Darkmoon turn entire packs into another threat Caroline believed she must obey.
Jessica drove one hand against the table, making the markers jump. “All units advance. Evacuation companies will clear the villages while the main force attacks Darkmoon’s center.”
Sarabeth studied the arrangement. “And the capital defense?”
“There will be no defensive reserve.” Mina looked up sharply, but Jessica moved every remaining silver marker toward the western front. “We are not waiting behind walls while he chooses where people die. We attack his fortress directly and break the ritual before it begins.”
Silence followed the order. It was dangerous, decisive, and unmistakably the strategy of the Queen who had once ended a century of pack wars. Officers exchanged tense looks before moving their markers; none mistook confidence for certainty. Sarabeth placed her fist over her heart. “Then we end it tonight.”
Beneath Darkmoon’s ancient fortress, a ritual circle glowed blood red across the stone floor. Rogue Alphas stood around its edge while masked attendants painted fresh symbols in iron and blood. The air vibrated with power too unstable to belong in the living world.
