The Alpha Queen Returns Episode 20

The Alpha Queen Returns – Episode 20

Silence swallowed the battlefield as Caroline completed her first step. Her silver eyes held no hesitation and little of the frightened girl everyone remembered. The air bent around her spectral body, drawing dust, light, and loose fragments of magic into a slow orbit. No one could tell whether she had moved toward Jessica, Darkmoon, or a path neither of them could see.

Jessica moved instinctively toward her. “Caroline, it’s me.”

The girl did not respond. When her lips parted, the deeper voice of the awakened presence crossed the field. “Mother.”

Jessica froze. The word recognized their bond without offering love. It was not Caroline who spoke, but something ancient looking at Jessica through her child’s face. Still, a faint tremor beneath the voice suggested Caroline remained somewhere inside, listening.

Killian’s eyes narrowed. “It has fully awakened.”

Silver power expanded without warning. Both armies slid backward across the broken ground, and even Sarabeth dropped to one knee with her sword planted before her. The pressure silenced thousands of wolves at once. Shifted soldiers were forced back into human form, their inner wolves hiding from the ancient command.

The Moon Wolf looked from Jessica’s golden light to Darkmoon’s crimson aura. “Both of you are the reason I slept.”

Energy exploded outward. Entire sections of the battlefield collapsed, forcing Jessica to raise Moonfang against the wave. Golden sparks streamed from the sword and vanished before touching Caroline. “Caroline, listen to my voice. You are stronger than this presence.”

“I have no need to listen.” The answer shook the Blood Moon Gate.

Darkmoon advanced through the silver pressure with slow, deliberate steps. “She is not rejecting you alone, Jessica. She is rejecting control itself.”

“What did you do to her?”

“I did not create this. I removed the seal you placed on her years ago.” He spoke like a liberator, ignoring the poison, coercion, and blood ritual used to force the awakening. His words opened the locked chamber of Jessica’s memory.

She saw herself kneeling before the kingdom’s Oracle, a much younger Caroline crying against her chest. Silver light poured from the child in waves powerful enough to fracture the ancient walls. Temple guardians had fled, unable to remain conscious within the infant’s uncontrolled aura.

“If she awakens fully,” the Oracle had warned, “she will surpass every Alpha bloodline. Without a formed identity strong enough to guide that power, she may lose herself to instinct.” The Oracle had offered no safe answer, only two dangers and a mother’s impossible choice.

Young Jessica had looked down at her daughter and imagined armies trying to use her, frightened packs trying to kill her, and an ancient force consuming the child she loved. Her hands had trembled. “Then seal it until she is ready.”

Golden light had closed around Caroline. The baby screamed once before the silver presence disappeared, leaving only an exhausted child in Jessica’s arms. Jessica had carried her from the chamber believing she had purchased years of freedom, never imagining the seal itself would become a prison.

On the battlefield, Jessica staggered. Sarabeth stared at her. “You knew about the power?”

“I knew it could overwhelm her. I wanted to give her time to become herself before she carried the Moon Wolf.” Jessica’s voice broke beneath the truth. She had hidden the memory even from Sarabeth, convinced secrecy would protect Caroline from those who coveted prophecy. “I did not know the seal would fracture her identity—or that anyone would poison and tear it open.”

Caroline rose higher above the ritual field as silver lightning spiraled around her. “Protection,” the Moon Wolf repeated with a cold laugh. “Is that what you call imprisonment?”

The battlefield shook. Rogue beasts stopped attacking and flattened themselves against the ground. Even Darkmoon paused as the Blood Moon Gate warped beneath Caroline’s anger.

Jessica lowered her sword and stepped forward without protection. Crimson debris cut her cheek, but she did not raise a shield. “Caroline, you are my daughter. I made a choice out of fear, and it hurt you. Please let me help you choose for yourself now.”

“Daughter,” the ancient voice echoed. For an instant, pain crossed Caroline’s face. Behind the silver light was the child who had been rejected by one home and concealed from another. “Then why do I feel as if I belong to no one?”

The question cut through Jessica more cleanly than any blade. Before she could answer, Darkmoon raised his hand. Black chains erupted from the Gate and wrapped around Caroline’s arms, waist, and throat.

“What are you doing?” Jessica rushed toward them.

“Preventing her collapse. Without containment, she will erase both armies within minutes.” Killian tightened his fist, drawing the silver energy inward. The chains drank from the Blood Moon Gate and fed part of Caroline’s power back toward him. “You may despise the cage, but her body cannot survive freedom at this scale.”

Sarabeth shouted that he was imprisoning Caroline, but Darkmoon did not deny it. “Call it stabilization if the word helps. Interfere now, and she dies.”

Caroline screamed as black and silver power collided. Reality cracked at the edges of the field, revealing glimpses of the void beyond. Royal soldiers heard voices from places that did not exist; rogues fled from shadows shaped like their own deaths. Jessica reached the chains, then stopped. For the first time in battle, every available action seemed capable of killing the person she fought to save.

Inside Caroline’s mind, the Moon Wolf stood before her. Choose again.

“I don’t want the power,” Caroline said. She thought of every adult who had decided what her life should be, from the Russos to Jessica and Darkmoon. The wolf stepped closer. Then choose nothing. Caroline understood the terrible offer. “You mean disappear?” Silence confirmed it.

On the battlefield, Jessica stretched out her hand and begged Caroline to return. Her voice carried no royal command now, only a mother’s plea and an apology too large for words. Darkmoon warned that choosing nothing would end the war by taking her beyond life itself. As the Blood Moon cracked, Caroline stepped toward the unknown—and her fate slipped beyond every human promise, prophecy, and crown.
