The Cursed Alpha’s Mute Bride – Episode 22
The Temple of the First Moon disappeared beneath its own weight. When the dust finally thinned, a crater of shattered stone and fading silver light scarred the mountainside where the sanctuary had stood. Rain turned the dust to gray rivers, carrying fragments of ancient runes down the slope.
Hunter climbed from the ruins beside Wren, one hand buried in the thick fur at her shoulder. Clay and the surviving warriors gathered on the ridge, bruised and bleeding but alive.
Wren’s full wolf form lasted only until she reached open ground. Moonlight rippled across her body, and her outline began to change uncontrollably—wolf, woman, then something suspended between both. The shift happened too quickly for bone or breath to adapt, leaving her disoriented each time the world changed height and scent.
She dropped to one knee in human form, only for spectral claws to strike the earth beneath her hands. A towering lunar wolf flickered around her like a second body struggling to occupy the same space.
Each pulse felt like two forces pulling in opposite directions. The wolf wanted to remain free after years in chains. The woman feared losing herself inside instincts she had never learned to guide.
Hunter landed beside her hard enough to crack the stone beneath his boots. “Wren.” He reached carefully for her shoulder, waiting until her silver eyes recognized him.
The instant his hand made contact, the mate bond exploded. Silver energy surged outward in a shock wave that forced Hunter back half a step and sent loose rocks sliding into the crater.
He narrowed his eyes, not in fear but understanding. “You are not unstable,” he said. “You are divided. Gertrude prevented you from growing together, so now both halves are fighting for room.”
Wren could not answer. Her reclaimed voice had retreated beneath the strain, but the wolf responded to Hunter’s presence. Its spectral ears turned toward him, and the violent flickering slowed.
Elara was not there to guide them, and the temple’s ancient voice had fallen silent. Hunter relied on the bond, giving Wren calm without trying to force control over her transformation. He recalled every lesson used to master his own first shifts, then discarded the commands that would deny Wren the freedom she had just won.
Cold swept across the crater without warning. Frost spread over stones still warm from the Moonstone’s release. Hunter’s expression changed as he recognized magic that did not belong to the temple.
“This is not only lunar power,” he said. Beneath Wren’s silver aura, black veins emerged around the broken crescent at her collarbone.
A second force awakened inside her. It had survived beneath the first seal, buried deeper than the chains binding her wolf. Gertrude’s original curse tightened like a living thing protecting itself from extinction.
Wren arched in silent agony. Silver light and black chains clashed through her soul, turning her body into their battlefield. The spectral wolf snapped at shadows no one else could touch.
Her human form collapsed. Hunter caught her before her head struck the rock and pulled her against him. “Stay with me. Do not let it convince you that pain means it owns you.”
Memory broke across Wren’s sight. Gertrude’s voice echoed through the ritual chamber: “Bind her wolf before it awakens fully. Seal the prison deeper than bone and soul.”
The black stone had done more than block Wren’s power. It had fed on the imprisoned wolf for years, converting every failed shift and moment of despair into strength for a second layer of the spell. Gertrude had punished Wren for being weak while secretly harvesting the suffering each punishment created.
Freedom had awakened its hunger. If the black curse consumed the energy released by the Moonstone, it could rebuild the first seal stronger than before—or destroy Wren while trying.
Hunter felt the danger through their bond. His own curse surged in response, eager to attack anything hurting his mate. If he released it without direction, two forms of forbidden magic could tear Wren apart.
He made his choice before Clay could stop him. Hunter pressed his forehead to Wren’s and opened the barriers he kept around his cursed power.
